EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOUNDATION
ABOUT THE FOUNDATION FOR UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL:
Established in 2015, The Foundation for University Hospital supports the mission of University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey. The Hospital's public mission is to provide a comprehensive healthcare program and services to the Greater Newark community, including providing the only Level I Trauma Care for Northern New Jersey and robust outpatient care services.
SUMMARY (Basic purpose of the job): Reporting directly to the Chair of the Foundation, the Executive Director is the principal development officer and champion for the Foundation with exclusive responsibility for raising and managing philanthropy that is essential to the Hospital's mission and expansion. The Executive Director is responsible for leading and strengthening a comprehensive fundraising program in support of the Foundation’s mission and goals. Specific emphasis is focused on annual giving, major giving, planned giving, grants and fundraising events. The Executive Director will strive to build a greater understanding and support for both the Hospital’s and Foundation’s mission, vision and goals in the region.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Develop and manage a diverse portfolio of philanthropic prospects, including grateful past patients of the University Hospital as well as mission congruent foundations and corporations on a local and national level.
2. Working with the Foundation Board, develop and maintain a five-year strategic plan for the Foundation that includes annual measurable objectives in the areas of annual giving, special events, capital projects and campaign donations, planned giving and grant awards to support reaching the five-year goals.
3. Liaise with and steward Hospital Leadership and Medical Staff to determine their funding needs and enlist their assistance in identifying prospects for institutional support.
4. Serve as the Foundation’s primary advocate and spokesperson in the local and regional community and, therefore, increase awareness, understanding and appreciation of the Foundation and the Hospital.
5. Prepare prospect research on potential donors and develops donor profiles using review of public documents, philanthropic interests, previous gifts, and predicted size of potential gifts to the Foundation for University Hospital.
6. Establish and oversee policies and procedures, as well as cultivation strategies, related to the implementation and management of an effective and professional fundraising program.
7. Advance solicitations of gifts to the Foundation, personally closing gifts as appropriate and supporting others in this enterprise.
8. Maintain an active portfolio of major donor prospects and be responsible for a program of personal visits, relationship development, solicitation and stewardship activities.
9. Develop, maintain and strengthen a program of planned giving through personal contact, seminars, brochures, newsletters, etc., to reach goals and objectives.
10. Manage the activities of the Foundation Board, engaging the members in fundraising activities and preparing meeting notices and agendas.
11. Prepare foundation and corporate foundation grant proposals as well as letters and gift proposals to individual prospects and donors.
12. Manage the stewardship of donors through progress reports, updates, meetings, newsletters and the like.
13. Develop annual measurable objectives in the areas of annual giving, special events, capital projects and campaign donations, planned giving and grant awards to support reaching targets established by the Foundation for University Hospital Board.
14. Manage the Foundation's donor database and online fundraising software.
15. Prepare and manage an annual operating and capital budget in conjunction with the Foundation Board. Assist in financial reporting and the implementation of financial controls.
16. Participate with UH Office of Public Affairs in launching solicitation materials, advertisements and the use of social media platforms to promote the mission of the Foundation, including the development of all Foundation communications and messaging.
17. Engage in networking activities to cultivate donor prospects and promote the Foundation for University Hospital.
18. Understands and adheres to University Hospital’s compliance standards as they appear in University Hospital's Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
19. Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and University Hospital regulations, laws, and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
20. Performs other related duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed must be representative of the knowledge, skills, minimum education, training, licensure, experience, and/or ability required. Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Public Health or a related area required. The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of non-profit fundraising experience in roles of progressive responsibility, particularly strong writing skills and a demonstrated record of continuing involvement in professional activities with the ability to set and meet deadlines and goals. A collegial behavior and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team are a must. Healthcare experience a plus. Master's degree in Fundraising, Business Administration, or Finance or related area preferred. Certification or CFRE helpful.
